Requesting materials and copies

When your nearby library does not have items that you want to use, you can request delivery (for books only) or copies of them. (Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service)

  • The ILL service is available only for Osaka University members (including professors emeriti).
  • You can apply for the ILL service online with your Osaka University (OU) personal ID.
  • When you choose to pay at public expense (management expenses grants) for the first time, registration at one of the four libraries is necessary in advance (during 9:00-17:00 on weekdays). Please bring your budget code and budget name with you.

Requesting book delivery from other libraries

The delivery service is available only for books. If you need journal articles, please request copies of them.

1. From OU libraries (free)

1-1. Quick Pickup

If the book you want has this button toriyose in the “Hold” column on its OPAC page, you can order it to your nearby library by clicking the button and then applying with your OU personal ID. The book will be delivered within 3 days unless it is being borrowed by someone.
*If your nearby library has an available book, you cannot request a delivery of the same book from other libraries.

1-2. Others (books of some department libraries and labs)

Books held in some department libraries and labs may be requested too. You can apply for them either online via “Interlibrary Loan” at the bottom of the left column of each book’s OPAC page, or in person at one of the four libraries.
Some department libraries allow you to visit them to use materials. Please refer to “On-Campus Libraries/Reference Rooms” for more information.

2. From other libraries outside OU (charged)

You may request books that are not owned by Osaka University. Application can be made either online via “Request Books or Copies via Interlibrary Loan (ILL)” under  Web Service or in person at one of the four libraries below. Requesting delivery from a library in Japan will cost about 1,200-1,500 yen and it will take about 2-7 days for the book to be delivered.

Requesting copies

You can request copies of journal articles or part of books only to the extent permitted by the copyright law.

1. From OU libraries (charged)

1-1. Quick Pickup

If the material you want to use has this button copy in the “Copy” column on its OPAC page, you can order its copies to your nearby library by clicking the button and then applying with your OU personal ID. The table below shows copying fees per sheet (no shipping fee will be charged). The copies will be delivered within 3 days.

*If your nearby library has an available material, you cannot request its copies. Please visit the library and make copies of it yourself.

1-2. Others (materials of some department libraries and labs)

Copies of materials held in some department libraries and labs may be requested too. You can apply for them either online via “Interlibrary Loan” at the bottom of the left column of each book’s OPAC page, or in person at one of the four libraries.

1-3. Electronic Document Delivery Service (eDDS)

If the material you want has this button eDDS in the “eDDS” column on its OPAC page, you can place a request of their copies in PDF by clicking the button and then applying with your OU personal ID. The fee will be 10 yen per sheet and can only be paid at public expense (management expenses grants).

After the PDF file is made ready, you will receive an e-mail notification. To view or print the file, please visit “View ILL Request Status” under  Web Service via a PC connected to the campus LAN.

  • Electronic files cannot be saved.
  • The file will expire in two weeks after the e-mail notification.
  • The file can be printed only once.

*When the same material is available in e-books or e-journals, you cannot place requests via eDDS.

2. From other libraries outside OU (charged)

You may request copies of materials that are not owned by Osaka University. Application can be made either online via “Request Books or Copies via Interlibrary Loan (ILL)” under  Web Service or in person at one of the four libraries below. When requesting copies from a library in Japan, the fee per sheet will be 35-55 yen for B&W/about 100 yen for color, plus the shipping fee. It will take about 2-7 days for the copies to be delivered.

Visiting other libraries outside OU

If the materials you want to use are not available in OU, you can visit other libraries outside OU to use or copy the material. Refer to “Visiting other academic libraries” for more information.
