Library Guide

How to enter library

International Studies Library is open to anyone. You don't need to present your student ID card or Library Card to enter.

Student ID card [undergraduate students and graduate students] or Library Card [the other students, faculty and staff and Non-Osaka University members] is required when checking out or requesting materials, entering the closed stacks or using facilities in the library.

*1 High school students or those under 17 years old will be issued a special card that can be used only at International Studies Library. This card cannot be used at other Osaka University libraries.

*2 Persons 18 years of age or older (excluding high school students) who have a purpose of learning or research, and who can visit the library in person to check out and return books.

Renewing Loan Periods

You can renew General Books only once through  "View Borrowing and Hold Status" in the library web service" on condition that the they haven't been reserved by others.

Renewal can also be done at the self-checkout machine or at the library counter.

※Journals cannot be renewed.

Return Procedure

When the library is closed, return items to the Service Counter on the 2nd floor or the drop box next to the entrance.

You can return items held in four Osaka University libraries and two of the faculty/research institute libraries to any of those six libraries.

*For journals, please return them to the library where you borrowed them.

*Please return materials from the CJLC Library directly to the CJLC Library.

If An Item Becomes Overdue...

Borrowing right will be suspended for the same number of days the item was overdue.

Please return library materials within the loan periods.

Due Date Notice from Library

Two kinds of e-mails will be automatically sent to you regarding the due date of your loan.

  1. Due date reminders (sent both three days before and the day before the due date)
  2. Overdue notice

You can stop receiving the due date reminders or change e-mail address for the library services through "Edit Your Personal Information" in the library web service.

For alumni and visitors, our e-mails will be sent to the e-mail address provided on the Library Card application form.

If you do not receive reminder e-mails, please turn off your e-mail blocking setting for the e-mail address “noreply-tosyo-auto@office.osaka-u.ac.jp" and "noreply-tosyo-minoh@office.osaka-u.ac.jp”.

If You Have Lost/Damaged Library Materials...

You will be asked to pay for them. Please contact library staff at the counter.

Copying Service

For the purpose of research, you can make a photocopy of library materials only to the extent permitted by Copyright Law of Japan.

If you would like to make photocopies, please submit an application form to the library counter (the deadline for submission is 15 minutes before the library closes). In order to make a copy, you have to agree on the following rules.

  • Only a part of a work may be copied.
  • Theses and other articles published in periodicals can be copied in their entirety if the next issue has already been published, or if three months have passed since the current issue was published.
  • For each item, only one copy can be made per person. Making multiple copies of a single item are not permitted.
  • Copying is permitted only for the purpose of research.
  • Copies are not to be re-copied or distributed.

Borrowing Materials / Request Document Copies

Requesting Materials or Photocopies from Other Libraries【Osaka University Members Only】

You can make a request for materials or photocopies of them which International Studies Library doesn't have.

  • You cannot request journal itself from other libraries. Instead, you can request a photocopy of a part of journals you need. Please note that photocopying is subject to Copyright Law.
  • Before making a request, please check on OPAC whether Osaka University Libraries have the material you need, and if it has, where the material is located.
    When you need journals, please search E-Journals as well.
  • If you have any questions, please feel free to ask at the library counter.

Using Closed Stacks

Entry to the Closed Stacks【Osaka University Members Only】

  • The closed stacks are available to all members of the University.
     Non-Osaka University Members are not allowed to enter the closed stacks. If you would like to use materials in closed stacks, please ask at the library counter to retrieve them for you.
    For more information, please refer to "About Using Materials from the Closed Stacks" below.
  • A special card key is required to enter the closed stacks. You can receive the key at the Service Counter on the second floor.
  • You have to leave your Student ID or Library Card at the Service Counter to receive the card key.
  • You are not allowed to enter the closed stacks with any belongings except valuables and stationery. Please put your luggage in a locker next to the Service Counter.
  • The closed stacks is available until 15 minutes before the closing time.

Using Materials from the Closed Stacks

Checking out or Reading inside the Library【Osaka University Members】

  • When you take materials out of the closed stacks, you need to check out them. If you would like to use them inside the library without checking-out procedure, please fill in a form at the Service Counter on the second floor.
  • After using materials, please return them to the Service Counter.

Checking out or Reading inside the Library【Non-Osaka University Members】

  • If you would like to request materials from the closed stacks, please fill in a form at the Service Counter on the second floor. The library staff will take them out for you.
  • After using materials, please return them to the Service Counter.

Making a Photocopy

  • Please fill in a form at the Service Counter on the second floor.
  • Once you have made your copies, please return the materials to the Service Counter.

Using Doctoral Theses / Master's Theses

  • Anyone can use doctoral and master's theses held by International Studies Library.
  • Theses are available from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays.
  • For more information about use of theses, please ask at the Reference Counter on the third floor.

Doctoral theses

  • We hold doctoral theses from the Department of "Studies in Language and Society" and the Department of "Studies in Japanese Language and Culture" at the Graduate School of Language and Culture.
  • You can make a photocopy in the library within the scope permitted by Copyright Law.

Available items

  • Theses accepted in and after April 1999 (including those accepted by former Osaka University of Foreign Studies)
  • Theses accepted in and after April 2013 are available on Osaka University Knowledge Archive Osaka University, the University's repository.
    *If the full text is not available on OUKA, you can read it on a dedicated terminal in the library (available from 9:00 to 17:00 on weekdays.)

Note

Master's theses

  • We hold master's theses from the Department of "Studies in Language and Society" at the Graduate School of Language and Culture and those from former Osaka University of Foreign Studies.
  • Some theses can be copied up to half.

Available items

  • Theses accepted in and after April 1987 (including those accepted by former Osaka University of Foreign Studies)
  • Theses accepted in the previous year may not be available because they have not yet been received by the library.

Notes for users

To keep our library comfortable, please observe the following rules.

Food and Drink

  • Drinks in containers with lids (e.g. plastic bottles or water bottles) are allowed.

Using Phone

  • Please refrain from using your phone in the library.
  • Set your cell phone to silent mode.

Other Notes

  • Make sure to always carry your valuables with you and beware to theft.
  • After using library materials, please return them to where they were.
  • Do not lend your Student ID Card or Library Card to other.
  • Smoking is prohibited.
